Raptors of Minnesota from THE RAPTOR CENTER

Come join us for this unique educational experience! Four birds of prey from University of Minnesota's Raptor Center is coming to the Icebox!

We will explore the different raptors found in Minnesota and their role in the environment. Learn the three key features of all raptors and learn why they are different from other birds. We discuss the positive and negative impact humans have on our environment, and participants are inspired by some of our greatest environmental success stories, such as the peregrine falcon and the bald eagle.  Finally, we learn about The Raptor Center and its important role in protecting raptors and the world we share. 

In addition to this formal presentation, the UMN staff and the raptors will have a Meet & Greet Booth on

  • Friday, April 13 from 4pm to 7pm
  • Saturday, April 14 from 12:30pm to 3:30pm

Writing "Up North" stories with Mary Casanova

Join Mary Casanova as she shares her research and writing process regarding many of her books set in northern Minnesota. She worked with eagle biologists in VNP to write When Eagles Fall. She consulted local game wardens for her work on Moose Tracks  and  Wolf Shadows. Her YA-adult novels Frozen and Ice-Out are based on history of Koochiching county and Rainy lake. Many of her picture books, such as One-Dog Canoe, stem from experiences living "up north."

“Navigating the DNR Website”with Dave & Wes Peterson

Our local fishing Guru's are back! This time the Peterson Brothers are helping us learn how to Navigate the DNR Website. 

Dave Peterson is a long-time board member of the Rainy Lake  Sportfishing Club and hosts a local radio fishing show. Wes Peterson is also an avid angler and is a retired fisheries technician with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
